Things to do in San Diego, California

We’ve RV’d extensively in California and San Diego is so far one of our favorite places to vacation. While we were there, we had near perfect weather! We went surfing, paddleboarding, on a boat tour and more.

Here are a few things to do in San Diego:

1. Visit the San Diego Zoo

We had heard this was one of the best zoos in the world and we would have to agree. It’s perfect for all ages, features a tram you can ride to get an aerial view of the zoo and is so big, one day might not be enough.

The zoo is sectioned off into different areas like the Australian Outback, Africa Rocks and Northern Frontier.

2. Visit the San Diego Safari Park

If I had to choose one over the other, the San Diego Safari Park would win over the zoo. Why? Because it’s designed so well and the animals have tons of room to roam. Their environments are created to be as close to what their reality would be like in the wild. It’s a very unique experience, to say the least.

We were staying with friends in San Diego who live near the Safari Park and at one point we could hear the lions roaring from their backyard. Talk about an amazing experience!

3. Visit Little Italy

Little Italy in San Diego is a fun place to visit. It’s a pedestrian-friendly area with plenty of pubs, restaurants, cocktail bars and music. There’s also the Little Italy Mercato Farmers’ Market which features produce, gourmet food and craft stalls.

We stopped at NaPizza for a bite to eat and it was some of the best pizza we’ve ever had.

4. La Jolla Cove Kayaking

If you enjoy outdoor adventures, we highly recommend going kayaking in La Jolla.

We went with Everyday California to explore the La Jolla Sea Caves and it was a trip we’ll never forget. The guides hop out of their kayaks in the water and swim you over into the sea cave. The water is so incredibly clear, giving you a top-notch view of some amazing fish.

We wrote an in-depth post about everything you need to know for going on this kayaking trip here.

5. Go on a Tour of the Bay with Hornblower Cruises

We went on a two-hour boat cruise with Hornblower and saw sea lions up close and personal, plus were given a great tour of the San Diego Bay and its 50 landmarks.

The tour was educational, fun, relaxing and one we would definitely do again.

6. Tour the USS Midway

After a Hornblower cruise, hop off and tour the USS Midway.

The USS Midway was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class. She was commissioned at the end of World War II and operated for 47 years. She was decommissioned in 1992 and now sits in the San Diego harbor.

We spent three hours touring the ship and still didn’t see it all.

The ticket you purchase is good for an entire day, so if you’d like to break up your tour with some lunch, you can leave and come back. Just stop by the visitor’s center before you go back in to show them your ticket.

7. Rent Surfboards

Do you want to try your hand at surfing? If so, you can rent boards and wet suits with South Pacific Surf

Surfboard rentals San Diego

They’ll deliver the gear you need to you at the beach! Which means you don’t have to worry about having a vehicle big enough to transport the boards or worry about getting your car dirty.

The guy from South Pacific Surf who delivered and picked up our boards was so incredibly nice and personable. He gave our boys some tips and even left us with an extra smaller board for them to try out. We highly recommend renting with them and marking surfing off your bucket list.

We hope you have an amazing RV vacation in San Diego!
