Pizza Cravings + RVing

Ugh. I want pizza.

Well, we’re in the middle of nowhere, an hour away from the nearest city.

But pizza sounds sooooo good.

Oh, I know. Pizza always sounds good.

You might think this is a conversation I had with one of my kids while RVing in the middle of nowhere, but nope, it’s a conversation I often had with myself.

I love pizza and we’ve had some incredible slices during our travels, from Hand Fire Pizza Jackson Hole, Wyoming to Little Italy in San Diego, CA. But sometimes we wanted pizza at home, aka in the RV and there wasn’t a restaurant or pizza delivery within 50 miles of us.

Using the Oven in an RV

I tried not to use the oven too much, especially when we were camping in cooler temps and relied on our propane tanks for heat and hot water. So when I did my RV meal planning and grocery shopping, I always had to keep in mind how long something needed to cook for if I was using the oven and or/stovetop. Heat or an oven-cooked meal? Not a hard decision.

Since this Naan Pizza recipe only takes 5 – 6 minutes to bake and very few ingredients, it quickly became a go-to RV recipe. Plus, I could also easily cook this over the grill or in a cast-iron skillet.

*Important RV oven tip: I learned this in an RV facebook group before we even hit the road. Place a pizza stone on the bottom of your RV oven and keep it in there for all your baking. It helps spread the heat more evenly in the oven. I did a couple of experiments with this and without the pizza stone, the bottoms of everything burned very quickly. I once had muffins that were torched on the bottom and not done in the middle. So, this tip works!

So, when you’re doing your meal planning for an RV trip, I highly recommend adding this flatbread pizza recipe to the rotation. I’m telling you, warm Naan bread with pesto, fresh mozzarella and arugula taste like a million-dollar meal while camping.

Easy Naan Pizza recipe with pesto

I wanted to call this recipe “A Quick and Easy Naan Pizza Recipe When You’re Stuck in the Middle of Nowhere in Your RV” or A.Q.E.N.P.R.W.Y.S.M.N.Y.R for short, but my family said that was a bit long. Whatever.

So, we’ll just go with Quick & Easy Naan Pizza Recipe with Pesto and Arugula. Still quite long, but worth every word.

Naan Pizza Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you need:

  • 2 packages of Naan Bread (I prefer Stonefire NAAN Original)
  • Pesto (I just use store-bought)
  • Fresh Mozzarella, drained and sliced
  • Roma tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • Arugula
  • Basil Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

The great thing about this recipe is you can mix it up to your liking. If you don’t like pesto, switch it out for a drizzle of olive oil. You can also use cherry tomatoes cut in half instead of Roma. You can also use shredded mozzarella if that’s all you have on hand or can find, but let me tell you, it’s just not the same as fresh.

I’ve also topped this with an arugula/spinach mix and it’s delicious. We also like to add chopped walnuts to ours.

I’ve also added chicken to this recipe and my oh my was it good.

Like I said, versatile!

How to Make Naan Pizza

There are three ways you can make this Naan pizza.

Bake It

You can bake it at 400 degrees F for 5 to 6 minutes on a baking sheet.

Grill It

You can grill is directly on the grill for 2 to 3 minutes. Just be sure to cover it for about a minute so the cheese will melt.

Cast-Iron Skillet

You can also cook it in a cast-iron skillet either on the stove or over a campfire.

If you do it this way, I recommend putting a few drops of olive oil in the skillet and add one Naan in the skillet. Cook until browned, about 2 minutes and then flip it over and immediately add the pesto tomatoes and cheese. Cover and cook an additional minute, until the cheese melts.

*For all of these different ways to cook Naan pizza, you’ll add the arugula drizzled with basil olive oil after it’s done baking. I like to slide the Naan onto a cutting board, slice it into strips and then add the arugula.
